Overview

The ridge is where desert driving lives. S2 introduces you to one of the most fundamental skills in the curriculum — learning to read a ridge, approach it with the right momentum, and hold your line once you are on it.

This session builds directly on the wheel placement awareness from S1 and adds the critical dimension of momentum management. You will learn how gears interact with terrain, how to manage steep drops without drama, and how to begin placing your vehicle on rounder ridges with consistency.

Medium dunes become your classroom. By the end of S2 you will be joining ridges with purpose — not luck.

What you'll cover

• Momentum theory — the difference between momentum and speed, and why the distinction matters in the desert
• Gear management on medium dunes — reading terrain and selecting the right gear before you need it
• Joining the ridge — approach angles, timing, and the commitment required to place the vehicle correctly
• Holding the ridge — maintaining position on rounder, lower ridges with consistent wheel placement
• Steep drop management — reading the drop, controlling descent speed, and staying composed
• Progressive work on medium dunes throughout, building confidence with each run

Progression — Marshal sign-off required. Member must demonstrate controlled ridge joining, ridge holding, and drop management on medium dunes.
