Overview

S9 introduces sustained high-speed driving in large dune environments. For most members, this session represents the first time they have driven desert terrain at speeds that demand a fundamentally different relationship with the vehicle and the terrain ahead.

At pace, the distance between reading a situation and responding to it collapses. Anticipation must become instinct. The vehicle’s behaviour at speed is different — suspension loads differently, momentum works for and against you simultaneously, and the cost of imprecision escalates.

Leading principles deepen further in S9 — managing a group at pace requires a different quality of judgment and communication than at intermediate speeds.

This is where advanced driving becomes genuinely demanding. And genuinely rewarding.

• High-speed driving in large dunes — sustained pace over 50 km/h in real desert terrain
• Vehicle dynamics at speed — how momentum, suspension, and traction change above 50 km/h
• Anticipation as instinct — reading the terrain far ahead and making decisions before they become urgent
• Managing the vehicle at the limit of pace — the inputs required to maintain control under sustained speed
• Leading at pace — the elevated communication and judgment demands of convoy management at higher speeds
• Building comfort with speed through structured, progressive runs in appropriate terrain

Progression — Marshal sign-off required. Member must demonstrate sustained high-speed control in large dunes and developing leading competence.
