Overview

S6 is one of the most instructive sessions in the entire curriculum — and not just for night driving. There is a well-understood phenomenon among experienced desert drivers: those who train seriously at night become significantly better daylight drivers. Without colour and shadow to rely on, the remaining senses sharpen. Feel becomes primary. The vehicle communicates more clearly when you are forced to listen.

Building directly on the foundation of S5, S6 introduces more varied and demanding night terrain. The session is designed to push members beyond familiarity and into genuine development — while maintaining the convoy discipline and safety culture established in the previous session.

What you'll cover

• Progressive night terrain — more varied and demanding than S5, introducing new challenges in darkness
• Developing feel as the primary sense — the shift from visual reliance to tactile and auditory awareness
• How night training improves day driving — understanding the cross-training effect and applying it
• Night navigation — reading the terrain ahead with torch light, convoy positioning, and route judgment
• Extended convoy management — longer drives, more complex terrain, higher communication demands
• Building genuine confidence in darkness — not absence of caution, but mastery within it

Progression — Marshal sign-off required. Member must demonstrate improved night terrain management and developed feel across varied conditions.
